Preservation Month 2023: People Saving Places

National Preservation Month in May is a great time to celebrate and promote the importance of historic preservation throughout Arizona. Here are some suggestions on how people can celebrate:

  1. Attend local preservation events: Many cities and towns organize events during National Preservation Month, such as historic tours, lectures, workshops, and volunteer opportunities. Review our calendar or check with your local preservation organizations, historical societies, or city planning departments to see what events are happening in your area.

  2. Visit historic sites: Plan a visit to a historic site, museum, or cultural institution in your area. You can learn about local history and the efforts made to preserve and protect historic buildings and artifacts.

  3. Share your preservation stories: Share your own preservation stories or those of your community with others. Submit a blog post on our website, share photos on social media, or organize a community event to share the history and significance of a local historic building or site.

  4. Volunteer for preservation projects: Many local preservation organizations need volunteers to help with projects such as restoring historic buildings, maintaining landscapes, or conducting research. Consider volunteering your time and skills to support these efforts.

  5. Support preservation efforts: Review Arizona Preservation Foundation's advocacy webpage and take action on currently threatened historic buildings and sites. Consider making a donation to the Arizona Preservation Foundation or your local preservation organization or becoming a member to support their ongoing efforts to protect and preserve historic resources.

  6. Educate yourself and others: Take the opportunity to educate yourself and others about the benefits of historic preservation. Read books or articles about historic preservation, join our book club, attend lectures or seminars, participate in our webinars, and discuss the importance of preservation with friends and family.
