Participate in National Historic Preservation Advocacy Week 2025: The Urgency of Now

As 2025 begins, Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant political shift. A new administration is settling in, key appointments are being debated in Senate confirmation hearings, and a new Congress—with Republican control in both chambers—brings both opportunities and challenges for historic preservation efforts nationwide.

With historically close margins—Republicans holding the House 218-215 (with two vacancies) and the Senate 53-47—there is an urgent need to educate new and returning lawmakers on the importance of historic preservation policies and programs. Over 70 new members of Congress are taking office, making this an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen bipartisan support for preservation initiatives.

However, preservation advocates must also be prepared to counter efforts by some policymakers who view preservation programs as bureaucratic red tape. Simultaneously, we have a chance to push for improvements to the Federal Historic Tax Credit, potentially included in a major tax bill.

Why Your Voice Matters

Now more than ever, we need both veteran and new advocates to take action. This is an "all hands on deck" moment for preservation leaders to highlight the local impact of our work and reinforce our relationships with policymakers. Strong delegations from every state are essential to ensure our collective voice is heard.

Historic Preservation Advocacy Week 2025 will take place from March 3-6 in Washington, D.C. This event is the premier opportunity to meet with Congressional representatives, network with fellow advocates, and make a real impact on national preservation policy.

If you have ever wondered whether participating in preservation advocacy makes a difference, now is the time to get involved. Your voice is critical!
