Preservation in Place, June 18, 2020
Introduction
The Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Arizona Preservation Foundation have moved the annual statewide historic preservation conference to an online virtual format to be held on June 18, 2020.
The event, Preservation in Place, will bring leaders in the state and national preservation field together in conversation to explore creative ways historic preservation can adapt to the challenges of COVID-19. Paul Edmondson, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will deliver the keynote address, highlighting the continued significance of preservation efforts to creating resilient, thriving communities. Attendees can choose between seven breakout sessions, join in celebrating the recipients of the 2020 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Awards and the Governor’s Archaeology Advisory Commission Awards, and finish the day at one of three “happy hour” networking events hosted by local preservation luminaries.
The virtual format makes the conference easily accessible to all preservation practitioners, commissioners, elected officials, advocates, and anyone who just wants to learn about historic preservation. Topics have been selected to achieve broad appeal for those interested in the protection of archaeological resources, the history of architecture in response to infectious disease, using preservation to promote economic development and vibrancy in historic downtowns, and how to balance regulatory efficiency with strong tribal consultation.
According to Kathryn Leonard, State Historic Preservation Officer, “From the comfort of their home office, kitchen table, or Arizona Room, Preservation in Place participants are free to pick and choose what sessions or activities they would like to join in.”
Preservation in Place will be held June 18, 2020 from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST. Registration is free thanks to the generous contributions of sponsors of the 2021 Arizona Historic Preservation Conference to be held in Tempe, June 9-11, 2021: Arizona Game & Fish, Arizona Preservation Foundation, Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, City of Phoenix, City of Tempe, Concord General Contracting, Logan Simpson Design, Salt River Project, Statistical Research Inc., Terracon, and the Public History Program at Arizona State University.
