Basque Pelota Ball Court & Associated Structures, Flagstaff (2006 Most Endangered Historic Place). Basque Pelota is a handball-like game played on the borders of Spain and France. When Basques immigrated to America in the 1800s, they brought their sport with them. Approximately two dozen Pelota ball courts exist in the United States. Of that, a dozen or so remain west of the Mississippi and only one remains in Arizona. (Photo source: Patty Rubick Luttrell)

Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board re-grants program
The Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board (AHRAB) recently received NHPRC funding for a $10,000 re-grant program to preserve and make accessible Arizona's historical records and provide continuing archival education and training. The State Library will provide matching funds, for a total of $20,000 available for re-grants.

The re-grant project and the goals it represents are prominent in AHRAB's long range plan. Arizona's re-grant program will help with continuing education for individuals with custody of historical materials and demonstrated need for collections management training. It will foster preservation, access, and the public and private historical records collaborations and partnerships with others to preserve our documentary heritage. Finally, it will serve
under-documented communities.

These funds are only applicable for archival collections and/or records and do not include library books, museum artifacts, building construction, etc. AHRAB will be holding 6 call-in sessions for anyone who wants more information or has specific questions about what they might be interested in doing:

August 27: 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
August 28: 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Advancing Sustainability Conference (Phoenix)
The Advancing Sustainability Conference is the prime educational component of the GreenSummit. This conference covers a variety of topics relating to how the concept of "going green" impacts our region's various industries, the communities we live in, and the natural environment around us. Industry experts, Arizona State University, and our Summit Alliance partners help provide guidance and support to maximize the learning opportunities of this unique and powerful event. Educational content caters to both business professionals and the general public.

The Advancing Sustainability Conference has something for everyone attending GreenSummit. Most of the general level sessions within each conference track are free for all attendees. Beyond the introductory level session, the track becomes more oriented towards professionals wishing to have a deeper understanding of the content. We designed the conference this way to allow a broader range of people to get exposed to some of the ideas and issues revolving around sustainability for various fields and topics. This exposure will hopefully foster a cooperative atmosphere that spans across backgrounds and industries. The advanced sessions allow professionals involved with that field to have a more intimate learning experience during the conference, along with potentially providing them with valuable industry specific educational credits or Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Exhibit: "Ron Peters - Historic streetscapes" (Mesa)
The Mesa Historical Museum is pleased to announce the opening for the temporary exhibit "Ron Peters: Historic Streetscapes." The exhibit opening will be Saturday, September 6th, 2008, from 10:00am until 4:00pm. The exhibit will be open at the Mesa Historical Museum until January 3, 2009.

After 35 years as a practicing architect and an artist producing watercolors for Southwest galleries and shows, Ron Peters has taken his passion for historic architecture and painting to the next level of artistic creativity. Ron's architectural practice has taken him to many of the country's most inspiring historic cities and towns, where he has collected a library of information and photographs that define the historic fabrics of these communities.

He is now sharing this knowledge, along with his artistic talents, in a series of fine art giclée prints. Ron's interpretation of the images visually documents the historic buildings or streetscapes in colors and textures that only time can create. Along with these visual images comes the story of the place, derived from dedicated historic research. When the image and story are combined, they reveal the heart and soul of the community. Come to the museum this September to see these remarkable prints featuring local Mesa landmarks.

Mesa Historical Museum, 2345 N. Horne (north of McKellips). Admission is $5 adults, $4 seniors, $3 children. For more information, visit http://www.mesahistoricalmuseum.org/.

Traditional pottery making level 1 workshop (Marana)
Sundays October through November 16 a series of 7 pottery-making class sessions will be offered by artist John Guerin, including a clay-gathering field trip on October 12. The Level 1 class demonstrates pottery making techniques the instructor has learned from modern Native American

The course introduces some history of southwestern Ancestral and Modern Puebloan, Mogollon, and Hohokam pottery-making, includes a field trip in which participants dig their own clay, and demonstrates initial steps in forming, shaping and smoothing, and completion of bowls, jars, canteens, ladles, and rattles of both smooth and corrugated pottery, by scraping, sanding, polishing, slipping and painting. The paddle-and-anvil handbuilding method is also demonstrated. Arizona Archaeological Society certification may be offered to persons who complete Traditional Pottery Making workshop Levels 1, 2, & 3 (Levels 2 and 3 offered when there is enough demand); certification requirements include 60 hours of instruction and hands-on work.

Old Pueblo Archaeology presents - "The 'deep structure' of early archaic rock art: human universals" (Tucson)
Old Pueblo Archaeology Center's "Third Thursdays" presents: "The 'deep structure' of early archaic rock art: Human universals" with Professor Ekkehart Malotki, location to be announced. On a global scale, all earliest art-making traditions consist of abstract-geometric motifs and nonfigurative patterns, regardless of whether they occur on portable objects or on rock surfaces. This is also true for the rock art of the American West, which houses a wealth of nonrepresentational images, both painted and engraved. To shed light on this most enigmatic yet fascinating imagery, which to many rock art researchers is of little interest since it seems to offer no insights into the minds of its creators, Professor Malotki resorts to human universals and cutting-edge ideas gleaned from neuroscience and evolutionary psychology. In addition to presenting novel ideas, he hopes to heighten awe and respect for the area's rock art legacy through striking photographs. No reservations needed. FREE.
